Alternate Day Fasting Schedule

Alternate day fasting alternates fed and fast or low-calorie days—strong weekly restriction that demands careful training placement and protein on eating days.

An alternate day fasting schedule alternates normal eating days with either zero-calorie fast days or very low-calorie modified fast days (~25% of needs). It creates a large weekly energy deficit but spikes hunger, social friction, and training inconsistency for many athletes.

Modified alternate-day fasting (small meal on fast days) is more tolerable than full fasts.

Common questions

  • Is alternate-day fasting better than 16:8?

Not inherently—compliance and total weekly nutrition matter more. Many athletes sustain 14:10 or 16:8 longer than strict alternate-day patterns.
