Cool-Down Protocol
A cool-down protocol gradually lowers heart rate and nervous-system arousal after hard sessions using easy movement, breathing, and optional mobility.
A cool-down protocol is five to ten minutes of easy cycling, walking, or mobility that transitions the body from high sympathetic drive back toward rest—not a second workout. It can reduce next-day stiffness when paired with hydration and sleep.
Static stretching may fit here if it feels good, but evidence for injury prevention is mixed.
Common questions
-
Is a cool-down required after every workout?
High-intensity or long sessions benefit most; short easy sessions may need only a minute of walking. Prioritize when heart rate was elevated for twenty-plus minutes.
