Kipping Pull-Up

A kipping pull-up adds hip drive to clear the bar faster in metcons—higher cycle speed with different shoulder and grip stress than strict reps.

A kipping pull-up uses hip drive and a hollow-to-arch swing to help the chin clear the bar with less strict pulling strength than a dead-hang rep. It raises work capacity in timed workouts but loads shoulders and grip differently than strict volume.

Build strict pull strength first; add kip only when shoulder control and lat engagement stay clean under fatigue.

Common questions

  • Should beginners learn kipping before strict pull-ups?

No—build dead-hang and strict strength first. Kipping without control often irritates shoulders and hides weak pulling patterns that scaling should address.
