Step-Up Knee Rehab

Step-up knee rehab builds single-leg quad and glute strength on a box—functional closed-chain ACL work progressing height and control before running.

Step-up knee rehab trains single-leg concentric strength by stepping onto a box or stair—forward, lateral, and crossover variations appear in ACL programs for quad and glute loading in functional ranges. Start low height, slow tempo, and no push-off from the trailing leg.

Control descent eccentrically before adding height or load. Symmetry with the uninvolved leg guides box height.

Common questions

  • When are step-ups introduced after ACL reconstruction?

Typically mid rehab once walking is symmetric and shallow squats are tolerated—often around eight to twelve weeks in many protocols, always per your clinician.
