Stimulus Control for Insomnia
CBT-I rules that re-link bed with sleep—fixed wake time, out of bed when awake, and bed reserved for sleep and sex only.
Stimulus control for insomnia retrains the bed as a sleep cue: go to bed only when sleepy, leave if awake more than roughly twenty minutes, and keep wake times fixed. The goal is breaking the loop where bed equals worry, scrolling, and frustration.
Naps and lie-ins early on can blunt the effect.
Common questions
-
Should you stay in bed if you cannot sleep?
Stimulus control says leave bed briefly when frustrated or awake long—return when sleepy. This rebuilds association between bed and sleep, not wakefulness.
