Beetroot Juice Nitrates

Beetroot juice nitrates may lower oxygen cost during endurance work by boosting nitric oxide. Whole beets and greens also supply nitrates with fiber.

Beetroot juice nitrates convert to nitric oxide in the body, modestly lowering oxygen cost during endurance exercise in some trials when taken two to three hours pre-session. Whole beets and leafy greens also supply nitrates with fiber.

Mouthwash with strong antiseptics can block conversion—timing matters.

    Many studies use roughly 300–500 ml two to three hours before effort. Start smaller to test GI tolerance before race day.
