Bone Mineral Density

Bone mineral density measures mineral in bone—DXA tracks it to gauge fracture risk alongside nutrition, vitamin D, protein, and loading habits.

Bone mineral density (BMD) is the mineral content per bone area—usually measured at hip and spine with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). It predicts fracture risk alongside age, falls, and medications.

BMD rises slowly with resistance training, brief impact, adequate protein, calcium, and vitamin D; it falls with menopause, inactivity, low energy availability, and steroids.

Common questions

  • How often should you repeat a DXA scan?

Typically every one to two years when monitoring therapy or risk—your clinician sets timing based on baseline, change, and treatment plan.
