Cycling Base Training

Cycling base training is a block of high aerobic volume and low intensity that prepares tendons, mitochondria, and fuel systems for harder work.

Cycling base training is a mesocycle emphasizing high aerobic volume—mostly zone 2—with gradual weekly hour increases and minimal race-intensity work. It builds mitochondrial density, fat oxidation, and pedal-stroke durability before intervals peak.

Increase volume roughly ten percent weekly with cutback weeks. Strength and mobility support knees and hips.

Common questions

  • How long should a base block last?

Often six to twelve weeks depending on starting fitness and event date—longer for new cyclists, shorter if aerobic fitness is already high.

  • Can I race during base?

Treat races as hard days and surround them with easy volume; stacking races weekly undermines base purpose.
