Erg Footplate Setup
Erg footplate setup positions heels, straps, and foot angle for a strong leg drive. Correct setup reduces shin stress and improves catch posture.
Erg footplate setup is adjusting heel cup height and foot strap position so the drive starts through the mid-foot with stable shins at the catch. Straps across the ball of the foot—not the toes—let the heel lift slightly on the drive.
Wrong setup causes early quads fatigue or heel lift issues. Check setup when sharing gym ergs between athletes of different heights.

How tight should foot straps be?
Snug enough to stay connected without cutting circulation—you should be able to lift the heel slightly at the finish of the drive.
