LDL Particle Number
LDL particle number counts circulating LDL lipoproteins—often aligned with ApoB and distinct from LDL cholesterol mass alone.
LDL particle number counts how many LDL lipoproteins circulate—not just how much cholesterol each carries. Two people with identical LDL-C can differ sharply in particle count and ApoB.
Fewer particles generally means less arterial traffic; fiber, weight loss, activity, and statins or other prescribed therapies lower counts when indicated.
Common questions
-
Is LDL particle number the same as ApoB?
ApoB counts all atherogenic particles including VLDL remnants; LDL particle assays focus on LDL fractions. They usually trend together—discordance warrants clinician review.
