Mitochondrial Density
Mitochondrial density reflects the number and efficiency of mitochondria in muscle, improving aerobic energy production with endurance training.
Mitochondrial density is how many mitochondria—and how efficient they are—sit in muscle cells to produce aerobic energy. Endurance training, especially sustained zone 2, increases density over months.
More mitochondria improve fat use and repeatability at submaximal paces.
Common questions
-
Does HIIT alone maximize mitochondrial density?
HIIT helps, but sustained aerobic volume is the primary driver. Most athletes need a base of easy minutes plus selective intensity.
