Neuromuscular Electric Stimulation

Controlled electrical muscle stimulation that supports activation during injury or deload when normal training is limited.

Neuromuscular electric stimulation (NMES) uses controlled electrical pulses to contract muscles when you cannot train normally—after injury, travel, or deload weeks. Sessions supplement—not replace—loaded training for maintaining activation and reducing atrophy risk.

Pad placement, intensity, and frequency need protocol; burning skin or cramping means dial back.

Common questions

  • Can NMES replace strength training?

No—it maintains activation during gaps but lacks the mechanical load needed for maximal strength and bone stimulus. Return to progressive resistance when cleared.

  • How often should you use NMES?

Follow device or clinician guidance—often three to five sessions weekly on target muscles during rehab. Stop if skin irritation or pain beyond mild fatigue appears.
