Normalized power adjusts variable ride wattage for physiologic cost—harder surges count more than average power alone suggests.
Normalized power (NP) is a cycling metric that weights variable efforts to reflect metabolic cost better than simple average power. A ride with many surges can show NP well above average power even if the mean looks moderate.
Coaches compare NP to average power and to FTP for pacing analysis. It pairs with intensity factor and training stress score on platforms that support them.
