Oral Allergy Syndrome
Oral allergy syndrome causes mouth itching from raw produce cross-reacting with pollen allergy—often milder than IgE food allergy and sometimes reduced by cooking.
Oral allergy syndrome is itching or swelling of mouth and throat after raw fruits, vegetables, or nuts in people sensitized to pollen—the proteins cross-react but often break down when cooked. It differs from IgE food allergy that can progress to anaphylaxis from the same food.
Peeling or cooking may help some items; others need avoidance per allergist testing.
