Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE)
Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) is a subjective scale—most commonly 1 to 10—used to rate how hard a workout feels regardless of pace, weight, or heart rate. An RPE of 6 might feel moderately challenging, while 9–10 represents near-maximal effort.

RPE is especially useful when heart rate data is unavailable or when daily readiness varies due to sleep, stress, or nutrition.
