Rebound Sleep

Rebound sleep is compensatory deep and REM sleep after deprivation. It helps recovery but does not fully undo the costs of lost sleep.

Rebound sleep is extra deep or REM sleep your brain prioritizes after deprivation—often following all-nighters, travel, or short nights. The first recovery night can feel unusually heavy as sleep pressure clears.

It does not erase all performance or metabolic costs from lost sleep.

Common questions

  • How long does rebound sleep last?

Often one to three nights after acute deprivation, with the heaviest deep sleep on the first full night. Chronic short sleep may need weeks of consistent bedtimes, not one marathon sleep-in.
