Sleep Fragmentation Index
Sleep fragmentation index measures how broken sleep is—many brief wakes ruin rest even when total time in bed looks acceptable on paper.
Sleep fragmentation index quantifies how often sleep is broken—awakenings, stage shifts, or restless periods—relative to time in bed. High fragmentation leaves you tired despite adequate hours in bed; alcohol, late caffeine, stress, and apnea risk worsen it.
Wearables estimate fragmentation from movement and heart rate; labs use polysomnography.
Common questions
-
How do you reduce sleep fragmentation?
Stable wake times, cooler dark rooms, earlier caffeine and alcohol cutoffs, and apnea screening when snoring or gasping appear. Fragmentation often beats total hours as a fix target.
