Threshold Intervals

Threshold intervals train at lactate threshold pace to raise sustainable race effort—usually one weekly session during build phases with proper fueling.

Threshold intervals train at or just below lactate threshold—often eight to twenty minutes at comfortably hard effort or cruise intervals with short floats. They raise sustainable race pace for half marathons and cycling time trials.

Frequency is typically one session weekly in build phases. Fuel carbs beforehand and cool down easily.

Common questions

  • How is threshold different from VO₂ max intervals?

Threshold work is longer and slightly lower intensity—sustainable discomfort; VO₂ intervals are shorter, sharper, and more maximal.

  • How many threshold sessions per week?

Most plans use one, sometimes two in peak blocks, separated by easy days. Stack only when sleep, fuel, and HRV support it.
