VO₂ Max Intervals

VO₂ max intervals are short near-max efforts with recovery to raise aerobic ceiling—typically once weekly within a base of easy volume.

VO₂ max intervals are short, near-maximal efforts—often three to five minutes at roughly 95–100% of max heart rate—with equal or slightly shorter recovery. They raise aerobic ceiling and stroke volume when spaced with easy days between sessions.

Frequency stays low—one session weekly is enough for most recreational athletes.

Common questions

  • How long should VO₂ max intervals be?

Often 2–5 minutes at very high intensity, or 30/30s stacks for time-crunched athletes—total hard minutes per session typically stay under 20.

  • Can beginners do VO₂ max intervals?

Build an aerobic base first; beginners benefit more from consistent easy volume. Add short intervals after weeks of injury-free walking or running.
