Climbing Contact Strength

Climbing contact strength is instant grip force on grabs—trained with short hangs and campus touches early in fresh sessions, not after long endurance.

Climbing contact strength is peak force generated in the first fraction of a second grabbing a hold—critical for dynos, snappy deadpoints, and sticky catches on bad feet. Hangboard one-arm locks and short campus touches build it; long endurance laps train a different quality with lower peak force.

Fatigue from yesterday’s limit board lowers contact output even when aerobic fitness feels fine on a treadmill.

Common questions

  • Does contact strength equal max hang weight?

Related but not identical—max hangs last several seconds; contact is rate of force development. Train both with short explosive pulls and max hangs on different days.
