Cold Weather Warm Up Protocol

A cold weather warm up protocol adds indoor dynamic work and longer easy outdoor minutes before intensity when ambient temperatures are low.

A cold weather warm up protocol extends general movement—indoor dynamic drills, then five to ten easy minutes outdoors before strides or heavy lifts. Hamstrings and calves need extra blood flow when ambient air is below freezing.

Save static stretching for post-session unless sport-specific needs say otherwise.

Common questions

  • How long should a warm-up be in freezing weather?

Fifteen to twenty minutes total is common—roughly half indoors dynamic, half easy outdoor movement before hard reps. Extend if joints still feel wooden.
