Concentric Velocity Training

Fast, intentional lifting phases build power and rate of force development at submaximal loads with controlled form.

Concentric velocity training prioritizes moving the lifting phase fast with intent—bar speed on squats, presses, and jumps—while staying in control. Higher velocity at submaximal loads improves power and rate of force development.

Light to moderate loads work best; grinding slow reps is the opposite stimulus.

Common questions

  • Who should use concentric velocity training?

Athletes needing power and lifters in strength-speed blocks benefit most. Beginners should master positions before chasing maximal bar speed.
