HMB Supplementation
HMB supplementation may reduce muscle breakdown during cuts and high load, especially for older or very lean athletes. Protein and sleep remain the foundation.
HMB supplementation uses beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate—a leucine metabolite—to blunt muscle breakdown during aggressive cuts, high training loads, or return from layoffs. Evidence is modest: it may help older adults or very lean dieters more than well-fed lifters.
It is not a substitute for protein, sleep, or progressive overload.
Common questions
-
Does HMB replace leucine or protein?
No—whole protein delivers leucine and the full amino acid profile HMB cannot replace. Use HMB only after protein and sleep are dialed; evidence is strongest in deficits or older trainees.
