Protein Bolus Ceiling

The protein bolus ceiling is the per-meal protein range that maximizes muscle protein synthesis—extra grams in one sitting rarely replace missed earlier meals.

The protein bolus ceiling is the practical upper limit per meal for muscle protein synthesis stimulus in most adults—often roughly forty to fifty grams of high-quality protein, beyond which extra amino acids are used for energy rather than additive hypertrophy in that sitting. It does not mean stop eating protein; it means spreading total daily intake.

Older adults and very large athletes may use slightly higher per-meal doses.

Common questions

  • Is more than fifty grams of protein per meal wasted?

Not wasted for total nutrition—it still counts toward daily needs and calories—but additional hypertrophy stimulus per meal often plateaus near forty to fifty grams for many adults.
