Zone 5 Training

Zone 5 training is maximal cardio effort—short sprints and peak intervals—that boosts VO₂ max but needs careful dosing and recovery between sessions.

Zone 5 training is maximal or near-maximal cardiovascular effort—short sprints, all-out intervals, or peak heart rate work lasting seconds to a few minutes. It raises VO₂ max and neuromuscular power but accumulates fatigue fast.

Most programs need one to two zone 5 sessions weekly with ample easy volume between.

Common questions

  • How often should you do zone 5 training?

One to two quality sessions per week suit most recreational athletes, surrounded by zone 1–2 volume. More sprints without recovery invite illness and plateau.
