Isometric Therapy

Isometric therapy uses static holds to reduce tendon pain and build strength without moving a painful joint through range. It is often the first step in graded rehab.

Isometric therapy is holding a muscle under tension without changing joint angle—wall sit angles for knees, calf holds for Achilles—often twenty to forty-five seconds for several reps. It can drop pain in irritable tendons while maintaining strength until eccentrics return.

Dosage matters: holds that spike pain for hours mean load was too high.

Common questions

  • When are isometrics better than stretching?

When tendons are irritable and stretching increases pain—isometrics build tolerance before you add range and eccentric work.
